Violent clashes between security and patrons at pool bar

Both temperatures and tempers soared at a local pool bar over the weekend, as a sunny Sunday turned violent.

Two separate brawls between security personnel and patrons at Cabana Pool bar were caught on camera, and there was reportedly a third as well. Two men suffered concussions.

Toronto police are now investigating.

Peter Ungurain, once a regular at the bar, hasn’t visited in a few years. Sunday was his first time back and he was shocked to see the aggressive confrontations.

“Definitely over aggression by security, which seems unusual for that place. I’ve never seen that before,” he said.

Ungurain sensed something was about the happen when he heard a commotion on the pier behind him.

He began recording and captured the alarming scene as a patron and security got into a fist fight.

A woman is seen laying on the ground, reportedly after being shoved by security during the altercation.

Ungurain says the bar has a reputation for being a “high class place” and the fight seems like a rare and isolated incident.

But on Sunday, that fight was allegedly only one of three.

In a separate incident, Josh Gomes and his friends also found themselves in the middle of a nasty clash with security.

It began with one of his friends reportedly smoking in a no-smoking area.

When Gomes and his friends were asked to leave, the situation escalated quickly. The vicious fight that broke out was also caught on tape.

Ryan Calvert who recorded the incident told VICE Canada he was threatened by security, and they confiscated his wife’s phone.

Gomes admits he threw water on the security guard who can be seen punching him several times.

As a result he says he went to see a doctor on Monday, and told CityNews both he and his friend suffered concussions.

Gomes says not only was security heavy-handed, but police were not much help. When he called them, he claims they simply dismissed him.

Police say pay duty officers at the club did call in the incident.

“We do have two calls that were made by pay duty officers on scene to ask for some assistance from the local division. Those officers did arrive and it appears that victims and witnesses were gone when they did arrive, so no investigation took place at that time,” said police spokesperson, Meaghan Gray.

An investigation is now underway but police say so far, no charges have been laid in either incident.

The club released a statement on Monday saying “Cabana takes incidents such as this one very seriously. We are cooperating with the Toronto Police Service so that they can understand the entire context of what took place including the customer conduct that lead to the altercation. Our priority is to ensure that our venue is a safe place for everyone including staff and customers. This was a very unfortunate incident.”
