Education Minister Stephen Lecce says provincial school boards will have to decide on their own whether or not to administer the EQAO Grade 9 math assessment next week.
The announcement comes on the same day high school teachers are staging their fourth in a series of one-day walkouts at several school boards across the province.
Lecce says he realizes that due to the ongoing job action by high school teachers the majority of students will likely not take this “important assessment”
“Students are once again not in class during their first week back from the holiday break when they should be settling in to the routines again,” said Lecce. “Report card season is coming up soon and students and parents will not see valuable comments from teachers on the status of their learning. And regrettably, due to these types of withdrawal of services by OSSTF, some public secondary students will not be prepared for the EQAO Grade 9 math test which is scheduled for this Monday.
“OSSTF has made a promise not to adversely impact student learning and they have broken this promise to parents. It is unfair that the union’s actions are undermining the success of our students and jeopardizing learning for some many students and the future leaders of our province.”
Lecce says those students who do not take the test on Monday will have another opportunity to take the test in June 2020.
