‘A beacon of light’: Heartfelt gratitude from husband of woman killed in Leslieville shooting

Police say the suspect arrested in the fatal Leslieville shooting that killed a mother of two was out on bail at the time of the incident. The victim's husband responds to the arrest.

The husband of a woman killed by a stray bullet while running an errand last week in Leslieville expressed heartfelt gratitude for the kindness and support of friends, first responders and strangers during what he called a “profoundly difficult time.”

“I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the brave and compassionate individuals who, as innocent bystanders, selflessly attempted to save Caroline before the arrival of the first responders,” Adrian Makurat said in a statement released late Thursday. “Their heroic efforts in such a challenging and distressing situation will forever be remembered and cherished.”

Karolina Huebner-Makurat was walking in the area of Queen Street East and Carlaw Avenue to pick up lunch when gunshots rang out just before 12:30 p.m. on July 7.

Police say she was struck by a stray bullet after three men got into an altercation and two of them pulled out handguns and began shooting at each other. Karolina – also known as Caroline – was taken to a nearby trauma centre, where she was pronounced dead.

On Thursday, police said they had arrested one of three suspects and the search for the remaining two continued.

A makeshift memorial for Huebner-Makurat continues to grow near the spot where she was gunned down. A GoFundMe page which has been set up by friends of the family has collected more than $250,000 of the now $350,000 campaign goal since it launched five days ago.

Makurat singled out the local community for their kindness and support, calling it a “source of strength” for his family adding that his focus has been on supporting his two young daughters, aged 7 and 4.

“Caroline was a beacon of light, and the compassion shown by each of you reflects the love and empathy she would have extended to others in a similar situation,” he said.

“To all who have shown us compassion and understanding, including the courageous bystanders who extended their care and support, we will forever hold your acts of bravery and humanity in our hearts.”

A public vigil is scheduled for Monday, July 17, at 6:30 p.m. at Jimmie Simpson Park to honour the life of Huebner-Makurat.
