8-month-old baby dead in Scarborough house fire; man in custody

An eight-month-old baby is dead and a 38-year-old man is in custody following a house fire in Scarborough.

Toronto police say fire crews were called to a home on Bushmills Square in the Finch Avenue and Brimley Road area around 11:15 a.m. Saturday.

Four people were taken from the home including an eight-month-old in life-threatening condition. They were taken to a nearby hospital where they were later pronounced dead.

A four-year-old and a 70-year-old were also rescued from the home and treated for non-life threatening injuries.

Police say a 38-year-old man was also found in the home with self-inflicted injuries. He was taken to hospital in critical condition and has been placed under arrest and charges are pending.

Police say all four are members of the same family but they did not confirm the nature of the relationship.

A neighbour who did not want to be identified tells CityNews she has known the occupants of the home for almost 10 years. She says a group of people had recently been living there with an elderly couple as they waited for their house to close so they could move into it.

The homicide unit along with fire officials are conducting a joint investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the fire and the incident that led up to the infant’s injuries and death.
