One man is dead after a boat capsized on Lake Ontario off Port Credit, despite the efforts of Toronto and Peel Police to save him and his two fellow boaters.
The dramatic rescue happened early Sunday afternoon. Three people were brought to shore, including a 55-year-old man who had no vital signs and was later pronounced dead.
The man’s adult son and the son’s girlfriend were also rescued and were taken to hospital for treatment of hypothermia.
“The Peel Regional Police Marine Unit were the first to arrive on the scene, and immediately started rescue attempts,” Const. Pete Brandwood said. “The son and his girlfriend were rescued and brought back to shore, and taken to hospital. But unfortunately the 55-year-old father was deceased, and attempts to rescue this individual by the Peel Regional Police Marine Unit were unsuccessful.”
The trio was apparently in the water for some time before another boater spotted them and called for help.
“There were three police boats there … I saw debris from a boat that obviously sunk. There was another boat there that was helping. There was a few people that had fallen in the water, so they helped them out of the water. That’s about all I saw,” witness Paul Kristofic explained.
The boat apparently overturned after taking on water and so far, no names have been released.
