A series of collisions brought Toronto-bound traffic on the QEW to a standstill near Niagara Street in St. Catharines, with three people sent to hospital.
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) from the Burlington detachment say the first crash occurred at the Niagara Street overpass and involved three vehicles. That scene was later cleared, with one driver transported to the hospital with minor injuries.
Shortly after, a second and more serious collision occurred roughly 500 metres beyond Welland Avenue. OPP said that the incident involved two tractor-trailers and five other vehicles.
Police initially said two people were taken to hospital with minor injuries. In an update on Tuesday, the OPP said one person suffered serious injuries.
The OPP said a 60-year-old male from West Seneca, N.Y., was charged with careless driving in connection with the second crash.
All Toronto-bound lanes of the QEW were closed in the area for the OPP investigation but reopened to traffic just after 1 p.m.
