One Dead, Five Injured In Separate Shootings Overnight

A man has died in hospital after he was shot in the back outside a Bay Street condo overnight.

Around 3:20am Sunday, people reported hearing five or six gunshots near Bay and Wellesley streets. When police arrived in the area, they found a man, believed to be in his 30s, lying on the ground outside 1001 Bay Street.

He had been shot in the back and bystanders had been performing CPR on him until paramedics arrived. The man was rushed to St. Michael’s Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Police say he did not live in the condo.

“The victim in this matter was dropped off in a white limousine. Apparently the suspect we’re looking for was waiting nearby,” explained Graham Gibson of the homicide squad.

Detectives recovered a gun a short distance away on Queen’s Park Crescent, and are following up on witness accounts of a man and a number of vehicles seen fleeing the scene.

People say they saw a man run down St. Joseph Street and get into a black car – possibly a Honda Civic. He is described as black with light skin, between 20 and 30 years old, muscular and wearing a black jacket.

“We have the best cops involved with this. So hopefully something comes of this and [it] gets resolved as quickly as possible,” said Gibson.

Police are also investigating another unrelated shooting at a banquet hall in the east end.

It happened at about 3:35am at Atlanta Party Hall at 1240 Ellesmere Road, east of Midland Avenue.

Two men and a woman were transported to hospital, one of the men with life-threatening injuries.

There are reports another man and woman also injured in the incident were treated and released after driving themselves to hospital.
