Hamilton officer dies after incident in police station

A Hamilton police officer has died after after an incident at a police station Tuesday afternoon.
Officials say the officer was at the Central Police Station of Hamilton Police Service when he was critically injured and taken to hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
The Canadian Press is reporting that the officer shot himself in the police station locker room, Tuesday afternoon.
The officer has been identified as Staff Sgt. Ian Matthews, a 25-year member of the service.
“This is devastating and I recognize the profound impact this has on our organization,” Hamilton Police Chief Glenn De Caire said in a statement. “We are supporting Ian’s family during this tragic time and our Critical Incident Response Team continues to respond to support our members through this tragedy.”
The case has been assigned to Halton regional police for a non-criminal investigation. Police say no further information will be released.
